Summer is coming in just a few months, and one of the best ways to spend a hot summer day in the south is on or by the water. In Gardendale, there are several places near the city to keep cool this summer. Here is a list of the very best:
Celebration Park in Gardendale has a splash pad. The splash pad will be open from May 1st to September 30th, and days of operation are Tuesday through Sunday. The splash pad is open to the public but can also be reserved for parties. Pavilions at the park are also available for parties, but they do stay booked.
Cosby Lake Park
Cosby Lake Park is located about half an hour from Gardendale. At Cosby Lake Park you can hike, have a picnic by the lake and go fishing. If you do plan on visiting the lake to fish, you will need a fishing license through the state of Alabama.
Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center
Located about 45 minutes from Gardendale, the Cullman Wellness and Aquatic Center has an indoor wellness facility and aquatics center and an outdoor water park. The indoor facility is open year-round Monday through Sunday. The water park is open seasonally from May to September from Monday through Sunday.
The Alabama Adventure Park and Splash Adventure Park
The Alabama Adventure Park and Splash Adventure Park is located right outside of Birmingham. It is a combined water park and amusement park. The amusement park has attractions for everyone, including roller coasters, a swinging ship, tilt-a-whirl, teacups, bumper boats, and a laser maze. At the waterpark, you can ride the Upsurge, Twister slide, Neptune’s plunge, and the Freefall slide. Other water attractions include the Kahuna Waves wave pool, Warrior Lazy river, and the Aqua Maze. Some areas are designed specifically for little ones such as Salamander Bay, Castaway Island, and Splash Island. You can purchase one-day passes to the park or save money and purchase a season pass. The season pass includes admission to everything, any day. You will also receive free drinks, 15 percent off any food purchase, free parking, free lifejacket, and innertube use and free sunscreen. Children two years old and under always receive free admission.
The Birmingham Zoo
While it’s not technically a waterpark or water facility, the Birmingham Zoo does have a splash pad located in the children’s area of the zoo. The use of the splash pad is included in zoo admission. Tickets are available for adults and children, with senior adults receiving a discount. Large groups also receive a discount.
• Rickwood Caverns State Park
Rickwood Caverns State Park is less than a 30-minute drive from Gardendale. While it is known for its underground caverns, the park does have an Olympic size swimming pool. To swim in the pool, you must purchase an armband in the gift shop in addition to the park admission fee. The pool has a high dive, low dive, and a slide. The pool is also available to rent for after-hours private parties.
This is just a highlight of some of the water fun you can have in and around Gardendale this summer. Additionally, there are also several splash pads throughout the Birmingham area, and most don’t require a fee or membership to use.
